StartupLog has one simple purpose ╤ to let you keep track of when a Macintosh has been started up and and when it is shutdown. You might find this information useful for:
╩╨╩figuring out how often a computer gets used,
╩╨╩troubleshooting (since you can know how often a particular computer
╩╩╩has been crashing during everyday use),
╩╨╩letting you know if a computer has been being shutdown improperly,
╩╨╩finding out if someone has been using a computer when they weren╒t
╩╩╩supposed to be,
╩╨╩loads of other things.
StartupLog is a Control Panel, and as such it must be located in the Control Panels folder inside the System Folder in order to work.
Keeping the Log:
Once StartupLog is installed, everytime your Macintosh is started up (whether by turning it on or restarting it), an entry will be made in a log. You can keep up to 999 entries logged at one time. Don╒t worry about creating a huge log since each log entry takes up only 8 bytes on disk. Since it is a Control Panel, StartupLog will be disabled when the shift key is held down during startup. StartupLog can also keep a similar log of when the computer is shutdown. If the computer is not shutdown properly, StartupLog will record that shutdown as a crash.
If you wish to save the log, you can choose Copy from the Edit menu, and then paste the log into your favorite word processor or spreadsheet, or simply hit the "Save Log" button to save the log as a tab delimited text file. The log is saved or copied using the current date format selected from the date format pop-up menu.
Compatibility Issues:
StartupLog requires System Software 7.0 or higher to run. Even though it is a Control Panel, StartupLog does not patch your System in any way. It does run at startup time like other Control Panels and Extenstions, but only to make a log entry in a file. The code that runs at shutdown time is installed using a documented system call, so it should not cause you any problems. If you were running version 1.5 of StartupLog, this version will salvage any information found in the old log and then delete the old log file.
Shareware Info:
StartupLog is shareware. Use by a for profit organization is $2 (U.S.) per computer or $100 for a site license. Individual use or use by non-profit or educational institutions it is free. Shareware fees should be in U.S. funds and sent to:
